Dungarvan & Wetherspoons 11 years 7 months ago #1

Just returned to the UK following a 2 week tour of Dublin, Waterford, Dungarvan & Wexford. Updates posted to the Directories. I'll also post a rant later.

All in all a great trip though & great to see cask becoming increasingly available outside of Dublin.

Highlight for me was Merry's in Dungarvan. Dungarvan Black Rock on cask takes some beating (we were there when the cask came on - & stayed a while). Great food there as well.

Other significant updates: The Moorings in Dungarvan now has cask & the Anchor has craft on tap. Davitt's in Dungarvan is closed though.

Dungarvan is a good place to go if you like your craft ale (overnight stay recommended).

As for the Wetherspoons at Black Rock, whilst the ale was on decent form & on cask, it was very disappointing that there were no Irish offerings amongst the 6 hand-pulls. In fact, the selection was so generic that I could have been in any Wetherspoons anywhere in the UK. I raised this (nicely) with the staff & manager, who assured me that this will change. Please keep an eye on developments.

They've been saying this since the launch...

Both Bru and Trouble have been regularly featured on casks
I'd imagine they're just flying out though.

I wonder if the cask is doing as well as hoped, they've put in a special offer on the cask due to "surplus stock"
Ghostship and Hobgoblin at €1.99 a pint.

Cask is doing actually really good in the Spoons in Blackrock. I was chatting with the manger and its just surplus cask and its a limited offer until it runs out. I have been out there couple of times this week and Ghostship, Hobgoblin, Tetley are all just €1.99 a pint. The Ghostship tastes a lot better than before when i had it a few weeks back it was very watery. I have been in that bar so many times since it has tasted much better. The Ghostship is by far the best cask on offer. Personally i am disappointed with the Broadside and Hobgoblin on cask. They just dont taste as nice on cask compared to draft or bottle. Tetley is a good option for a light guy to start on. Surprised the bar isnt packed with Beoir members such a great deal on that you wont get in any other bar in Dublin.

The Derry spoons constantly has deals on cask as well and they go through a fair bit. Pints at the minute are £1.49.
