malting kiln 10 years 8 months ago #1

Hi All,
One of the stumbling blocks I'm coming up against speccing out the malthouse is a kiln and roaster.
Does anyone know of designs or plans or maybe suggest other kit that can be adapted?
I'd love to make the kiln straw-fired so I could source everything i need for the process on-farm.
Also thinking about the roaster, maybe a commercial coffee one?
Thanks

Have you visited any maltsters? Warminster still floor malt, would be where I would start.

I love your ambition and wish you well.

However, touring maltsters may be like visiting small breweries:

"And this is out 10 Hl Pilot plant" !!

When all you can manage is 100 l production.

Malt dryers and kilns vary in size from big to HUGH (in joke for huge).

Seriously what is your batch size?.

I used to dry 10kgs of malt in the tumble drier and if you rewire the said drier and bypass the various safety systems you can roast in them (original thread idea came from Oz!!)

you're spot on <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D --> I'm aiming for a half ton batch size. I like what you're saying about the tumble dryer, knocks off the rootlets too!Maybe i should be looking at repurposing old laundrette equipment. . .

Pm me your email address. I was at a very detailed all day seminar given by Crisp a while back, I'll send you on the slides.
