Any good beer in the Canaries? 19 years 2 months ago #1

I'm off to Lanzarote tomorrow morning and anticipate a beer free week unless any of ye know of decent beer out that way. Maybe some of the English influence out there will turn up something nice but my past experience in Tenerife presented me with yellow, fizzy liquid that was so cold it numbed the tongue. I look forward to checking in the see what options you can offer. Slan for now!

No offers then? I´m not surprised, the beer is generally terrible unless you get into a German bar in which case some very tatsy pilsner is to be had.

Sorry. If there was a 'tumbleweed smilie' I would have replied.

If you can get your hands on some Mahou (Negara) black its a very nice dark lager, worth trying

I missed this topic first time around. I was in the Canaries in January and as you found out the selection is poor. The supermarkets do stock Pilsner Urquell and at a good price, about 3.80 for 4 bottles IIRC. They also stock Jever in cans which is a decent German pils, quite hoppy. As for finding decent beers in the bars, well......

I missed this post cause I joined the site recently but for future visitors to Spain I´d recomend not to bother too much looking for great local beers, simply there aren´t many.

In places like Madrid or Barcelona you may find the odd bar serving their own beers but this is the exception to the norm. Yet, a national beer that is worth trying is Voll Damm, a dark, strong double malt stuff which is quite tasty.

By and large, I find that in hot countries people tend to prefer light, fizzy, refreshing beers. Besides, the culture of drinking in Spain, for example, revolves around wine obviously.

There are also historical reasons that explain the little differences that exist between beers in Spain. During Franco´s dictartorship the price of beer was fixed by the authorities and all brewers had to stick to it. Therefore, everybody used more or less the same ingridients and techniques. That hasn´t change much I´m afraid.
