Making wine from kits 13 years 2 days ago #1

Does anyone do this with success? I love 'nice' wine. I tend to spend a little money on wine. I've always thought that decent wine needed ancient vineyards and generations of experience blah blah blah....... and that I'd only be disappointed by a kit. Can anyone with kit experience convince me?

Thanks

The best way to convince someone is for them to actually taste some kit wines (or pure fruit based country wines)

Where in Meath are you?

Some of us meet up in the Old Boro in Swords to taste beers but often we have some wines (or port) as well.

Have a look here:

You are more than welcome and if you can make it I will bring some for you to taste.

I've made some stunning wines, but they were not from kits.

I believe you can get passable results with some of the high end kits that are provided with a lot of pure juice and some skin packs to help the vinosity along.

My favourite that I made was a plum wine, it was about 10kg of juiced plums and then water and sugar to bring it up to where it's needed.

I made a grapefruit wine that the ladies went mad for, a black tea wine that my wife loved and then a banana wine which turned out very well after two years.

I made one of the more expensive white wine kits once. The results were pretty good, probably comparable to a drinkable sub-€10 bottle of wine.

I just don't find it as rewarding as brewing, as with the kits you don't have control over the recipe and it doesn't feel like you're truly making your own drink in the way that brewing does.

Im making two 6 bottle connissuer, one sav bla and one cab sav, im 3 weeks in out of 4 before i bottle. They taste pretty decent already (well ive drank similar before without conplaining) they taste very raw this stage and big alcohol taste but like i say its early stages. Piss easy to do. Id try some 6 bottle kits as they are cheaper and less work. Im quite excited about mine anyway.
