Washing bottles? 14 years 1 month ago #1

Hi all

I'm sure this is goggleable but I'm wrestling the kids here while
trying to prep for a bottling!

Simple question, I've been Washing my bottles with a very mild fairy solution and rinsing,
Is this bad news, I don't have anything else, I can't go and buy something else either, would i be better using a bleach/vinegar for the brush washing stage?

Cheers

Use it after you have cleaned them and not at the brush washing stage. I use the bleach/vinegar mix as a sanitiser and not as a detergent.
You want to make sure all that fairy is well away or you will know all about it when you pour your first from the batch.

You really only need a minute amount of detergent ( detergent is great at removing oils and greases ( not usually a problem in beer bottles )) Main thing is to use a hot rinse to soften yeast deposits and 'owt else, a cold rinse ( coz' cold mains tapwater is more sterile than your hot water ) Then a final rinse with a sanitizer. Bleach/vinegar is an option but then you need to rinse again with mains tap water.

A lot of bottlers use StarSan - this is a "no rinse" sterilisers ( but drain them before filling )

Cheers

Nope, the bleach/vinegar is a no rinse job.

Just thinking, anyone reading this who hasn't come across some of the other posts on bleach and vinegar as a steriliser should google it (and if anyone is going to go down that route remember to add both bleach and vinegar separately to water. Don't mix them together).
