I'm thinking country men on high nellies cycling to the pub down the sticks daily <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt="" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->
I'm sure there are more sad old gits in Dublin than there are "down the sticks", although there may be more of a tradition of paying for what you cant get up the big city!
Is this a reason for the Irish love of the drink ;)?

Don't knock the oul high nelly man - she was a sure sign of wealth in the pre- Celtic tiger days ! Tis many a marriage was started on the cross bar of a high nelly on the way home from a dance !!
