Legal annual quantity limit for home brewing in Ireland 14 years 3 months ago #1

Hi,

I live in Virgina, USA, but i am originally from Monaghan, Ireland. I have been an avid home brewer for almost five years and i was wondering if anyone knew the quantity limit for home brewing in Ireland before a brewer is required to obtain a permit. I am planning on getting my friend, who lives in Monaghan, into brewing because he is really keen, but i'd like to know the limits in case he goes nuts and the excise man comes a calling. I realize that exceeding the limit is fairly unlikely but, with the help of friends and the graduation to all grain brewing, I have exceeded the Virginia limit (200 Gallons) without really thinking about it, three years in a row, so it is doable. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of information online relative to how Ireland regulates home brewing. Can anyone shed some light on this?
Regards,
Garreth

There's no limit in Ireland. You can brew for personal consumption as much as you want.

The second you try to exchange the beer for money or anything else, you are a commercial brewer in the eyes of the law and are required to have a licence, pay duty and be up to code on food safety.

Section 77 (f) of the Revenue Act[/url:1ts7xrbe]

Good leaflet here[/url:1ts7xrbe] too.

No mention of limits.
