Bud buys Budvar.

There's a good, brief, explanation of the deal on Pivní Filosof here[/url:3dt66sqx].

The original article explains that too. Budweiser bought Budvar's main rival in the town of Budweis, giving it the right to use the Budwieser name.

Checkmate by the looks of it.

It's just a name and a token parcel of land which was split off from the brewing operations previously. The brewing operation carries on under the name Samson Pivovar, and A-B InBev haven't touched that.

It will help A-B InBev sell Budweiser-branded beer in markets which currently forbid it, but it doesn't (as far as I can see) bring them any closer to acquiring Budvar.

But I don't think they want to. They just want to be able to use the name Budweiser everywhere?

I get the impression it's more that they want exclusivity over the name, everywhere. Even if they contract Samson to start producing American-style Budweiser in the Czech Republic, wherever they sell it Budvar will already be there, and won't go away.

Purchasing the Budějovický Měšťanský name seems like the kind of thing you'd do as a mop-up operation after closing down Budvar in order to ensure absolute exclusivity. I don't see how it changes much at this point.
