Calling All Hops Growers !!! 14 years 4 months ago #1

So.. Stemming from another post: hop books[/url:1kz3ubvv]

this site essentiallyhops[/url:1kz3ubvv]has a list of currently availbale rhizomes at the moment to choose from so myself (and some others )are considering it

I have a question for all the hop growers out there:

If you were to pick your top 3 to grow & cultivate - what would they be ?
rated in terms of :
1. The most versatile i.e. covering the most range of beer styles

2. In terms of Crop yield ? (also, how many batches would an average yield cover ?)
3. ease of growth in our climate
4. ease of Growth in an urban - limited space area
4. Any other Rating Reason not Covered above
(this should be fun !!)

Having just stuck in a few last year and to late in the season at that,I've very little to offer.
What I will say though is pick where you plant them very carefully.
I put 3 cascades and a fuggles in, 3 of them along a fence thats in sunlight most of the day, the other 1 in a more shady spot.
The difference was unreal, the 1st 3 made around 10' I'd guess, the runt didnt even make one foot.

Similar experience to Spud

My first year with 3 varietees

( There is another thread somewhere listing what the various members are growing:
Come spring it will be time to swap some rhizomes )

They need FULL sun to set cones.

Mine didn't flower till they were at first floor eaves level then above that Bingo!

Cheers

I'd go with a "triploid" hop as you'll see the fastest growth and get loads of cones. Cascade seem so easy to grow and of course are super tasty.

If I could go back again, I'd probably just grow Nugget and Cascade. Having a small number of varieties means that you get to harvest them at relatively the same time and get it all over with, too.
