Brewing water 18 years 7 months ago #1

Lads,
I was up the cooley mountains today for a walk and came accross a mountain spring. It tastes as good as any bottled water i've tasted so I'm thinking about using it for beer. Obviously I'll have to boil it first before using it, but I was wondering if anyone else is using this type of water and what success they had with it as my tap water is crap.

beer is nearly all water so the better the water the better the taste. are you mashing? if so you might want to get a water analysis or a least a ph. reading. The water from the well I use is very acidic hovering around 5.5 to 6 ph and is quite low in minerals so i mostly brew light coloured beer.

If your mashing, grab yourself an alkalinity test kit from a aquatics supplier and a pH meter (30 quid of e bay). It's the simplest anaylsis you can do at home. It would be handy to know the calcium levels too becuase calcium is important for both the mash and fermentation. A full analysis is best because there could be heavy metals in the water and this would be bad for both you and the beer.

I'll Try and get it analysed somewhere. I know a guy who works in the council taking water samples, so i'll ask him if he can test it for me.

Cheers.
