I was up at the giants causeway at the weekend and took in a visit to the Bushmills distillery, they have 1 mash tun going all the time with each run producing 4800 Litres ago. The one thing that surprised me was that they do not reuse the veast but instead import it from Scotland.

its a great tour isnt it. the kilbeggen distellery is still my fav though. it combines a musem with mash tanks, stills, water wheel ect as well as a working still still producing whiskey they were casking some the last time i was there. the fumes were amazing

did you stick your hand up in time for the whiskey comparson? i ended up doing this as well as drinking the free sample as well as my wifes as well as some yanks. all before i had breakfast

Both tours ARE great, but I agree that Kilbeggen's tour is even better.

When I was there the wash (mash) was fermenting away in a huge wooden barrel and it was open and the little rope preventing people from going upstairs was open so I walked up there and got to see all the barrels aging and the wash actively fermenting; SUPER COOL.

-I do have to advise STRONGLY against buying the "Kilbeggen Distillery Reserve" from the distillery, though; it's only 3 years old and is VERY, VERY rough. They tried to make up for the shorter aging time by putting it into smaller barrels but it definitely needs a few more years. (If anyone wants some let me know; I KNOW I won't be able to get through that bottle; it's too painful.)
