[quote:dzq73vgo]Dear Anthony

Good to hear from you - sorry for delay in repling but I am abroad at
the moment with limited access to e-mail.

Thank you for your enquiry about sailing the in the Great Baltic
Adventure. We will be delighted for you to join us on our passage. The boat comes with three professional crew and I expect at least half the participants will have significant sailing experience. There is no need to go out and gain any initial experience before you come on the trip. You will be shown all you need to know and will have a chance to take part in all the activities. However if you wish to gain some initial experiance that would be interesting.

The only worry I have for new sailors is that they might get sea sick which is very unpleasent, and whilst we can core the crew will have a miserable passage. Since you say you have been out in a fishing boat it would appear you will probably not suffer fromsea sickness.

The cost per week is £700 per person inclusive of on board food,
safety gear and waterproofs. I will be asking for a 25% no refundable
deposit in January to reserve each place on the yacht.

Each leg goes from Saturday to Saturday. We would aim to be in port on
the Friday night - spend Saturday on visits, beer festivals and change
over and set sail on the Sunday. Most passage times are less than
three days so our intension will be to sail towards our destination
and then when close, we will sail around the local area which in the
Baltic in particular will be very spectacular.

It will involve a mixture of night sailing and staying over night in
local ports. This has the advantage of access to showers and local
restaurants if required. Since it is May/June we should enjoy long
hours of daylight and minimum of night sailing.

The yacht is a 60ft Clipper called Thermophylae run by the Discovery
Sailing Project and although it has been fitted out the accommodation
is comfortable but utilitarian with little privacy and limited
washing/shower facilities.

The yacht comes with a professional skipper and two full time crew and
is generally used to take scouts and delinquent children sailing, so
it should be OK for brewers!

The various legs are as follows:

Leg 1 - Departs London on 15th May arrives Cuxhaven on 21st May ?
this is a hard sailing leg up the north sea, it will probably be
around 3.5 whole days sailing with a short stop off in a Dutch
secondary port. It is the only leg with true tidal navigation.

Leg 2 - Departs Cuxhaven on 22nd May via Kiel Canal to arrive
Copenhagen 28th May - there are some complications associated with
Baltic end of the Kiel canal and there may be a delay. It takes nearly
a day to complete the canal. There should be some spare time to visit
the ports south of Copenhagen or Malmo in Sweden. We hope to moor near
the city centre. We can take part in the annual Copenhagen Beer
Festival and I hope visit Carlsberg?s Jacobsen?s Brewery over lunch.

Leg 3 - Departs Copenhagen on 29th May arrive Stockholm arrive 4th
June this is a very scenic passage sailing near the coast most of the
time. Although quite a long passage we will sail near a number of
Islands which will be convenient for a short stay. The sail into
Stockholm which is built on a series of islands is spectacular and we
hope to moor in the city centre a few minutes walk from the two pubs
hosting our beer festival.

Leg 4 - Departs Stockholm on 5th June arrive Helsinki 11th June this
is a slightly shorter passage again through a whole series of islands
which will make for some interesting stopovers. Helsinki is a more
industrial city and the harbour is some distance from the city. We
will hold a beer festival in local British pubs.

Leg 5 - Departs Helsinki on 12th June for Saint Petersburg the final
leg is the shortest and we will probably be able to spend each night
in port. On leaving Helsinki we may be able to visit other local
cities such as Turku the European city of Culture or Tallinn a
fantastic medieval city. The trip up to Saint Petersburg which last
about a day is particularly interesting with Dacha running down to the
canal and the Russian Navy parked along the banks. The British pub in
Saint Petersburg is accessible by small boat. The city is one of the
finest in Europe, the major regret may be short duration of our stay.
This leg is particularly suitable for people who prefer a gentle
sailing and welcome the opportunity of a hot shower every day.

Crew on this leg are responsible for obtaining their own VISA to enter
Russia. We will provide assistance with obtaining visa from the UK if
required.

Our final destination is Tallinn where we drop off the yacht we would
request the crew to stay on board and help us man Thermophylae from
Saint Petersburg to Tallinn leaving on Sunday 19th June arriving
Tuesday 21st for flights back on 22nd June.

It is the responsibilities of each participant to make their own way
to and from the boarding and departing ports and to book arrange any
accommodation outside the book dates.

The itinerary is set up with a fair amount of flexibility but the
organisers cannot accept any responsibility for changes in program or
delays due to weather which is out with our control.

Every care will be taken to ensure a safe passage. Participants accept
that they come entirely at their own risk and should carry their own
personal insurance.

Kind regards

Nice one, GoodForWhatAlesYou. I'd definitely go for the last leg even though it's the shortest. Sailing into St Petersburg is great fun -- the first thing you meet is massive, grey concrete letters at the harbour mouth spelling "Leningrad": no Perestroika here, comrade <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->

£700 sounds a lot, but then €10 sounds like a lot for a beer but is sometimes worth it for something really special.

I got the same reply. I was wondering why he said "Since you say you have been out in a fishing boat it would appear you will probably not suffer from sea sickness", when I hadn't said anything in my enquiry about a fishing boat.

The £700 doesn't sound too bad to me considering it's inclusive, there will be a huge supply of beer and the overall experience. But you do have to add the cost of making your way to the start point and home from the end point of the leg you're considering going on.
