This "my friend used to make homebrew in the bathtub" business drives me absolutely CRAZY!

Does anyone have any idea where this comes from? -Have people just seen homebrewers chiling the wort in an ice bath in a bathtub and come to the conclusion that they're "Brewing in their bathtub"?

-Or does this come from people hiding distillation stills indoors in a bathtub in case of an explosion or something?


I'd really love someone to seriously and dramatically debunk this myth; the "homebrewing in a bathtub" thing needs to die!

Actually brewing in a bathtub may not be an 'urban legend'. Recently read on different craft brewer forum about a guy who brewed 200l in a bathtub and converted another one to fermentation tank (added cover etc). Anyway - still waiting for some pics from him to confirm it. If there will be any, will post it here <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt="" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->

I think a combination of factors, you had the prohibition movement in the US which lead to bathtubs being used as they were easier to hide than real brewing equipment, "what brewery m'lud? we were running a bath house" type thing. You also have the fact that houses in Ireland would have had colder bathrooms than any other in the house and also the bath would have contained any blow offs or spill overs from fermenters so it would be common to put stuff in a bath as the only place in the house where wifey would allow a spill over, some of the yanks still do this for the spill overs.
