Sorry "Żywiec" = "Shivvy-eks" !?!?

Jeeze that's almost as bad as "BH" = "V" in Irish!

Better than that: Lodz is pronounced "Wootz"

In Hebrew B, G, D, K, P and T (the "begadkephat letters") all aspirate, though only B and P have alternative letters in English for the aspirated form these days. Since the invention of movable type we lost T's aspirated form Þ. Which brings me on to my huge pet hate of "[i:3r2opjct]Ye[/i:3r2opjct] Olde" things. That's a Þ not a Y goddammit!

Is that right! I didn't realise that. It makes sense.

The first movable type sets came from the continent, Germany usually. They didn't have Þ, so the English typesetters substituted Y because a Gothic German Y looks sort-of like it.

It's actually Zhiv-ee-ets.

First syllable just like Dr Zhivago.
Long e in the middle.
Last syllable like it looks, same as gets, bets, etc.

I lived in Krakow for a year...

I've heard the "-ets" variant (I think it's regional)
