If the initial fee is part of your start up costs, 250/year is not too bad for a small venture but not sure what the cost of a brewing license and warehouse bond would be.

God I hate these "shoot down the enthusiast" threads. Not that the questions shouldn't be posted, but that our laws make the realistic answers so damn grim.

To add to what's been said already, you wouldn't necessarily need an on-site brewery for the homebrewed special, but it would have to have been brewed in some licensed brewery. It could be possible to arrange time in a brewery to get the batch made, but of course that's going to be immensely awkward and the batch is going to be much bigger than home scale. Not really a runner for the "quick, lash us up 5 gallons" approach which is I think what you're suggesting. You can do it in Denmark with minimal red tape, but it's not really practical here.

On the special restaurant licence, the conditions are probably impractically strict here. It allows:

"Intoxicating Liquor Act 1988":bfw10bkl wrote: ( a ) the supply of intoxicating liquor for consumption on those premises, and

( b ) the consumption of intoxicating liquor on those premises,

if, in each case, the intoxicating liquor is—

(i) ordered by or on behalf of a person for whom a substantial meal has been ordered,

(ii) supplied in either the waiting area or the dining area of the restaurant,

(iii) consumed in the waiting area of the restaurant before the meal by the person for whom the meal has been ordered, or consumed by that person in the dining area of the restaurant either during the meal or at any time not later than thirty minutes after the meal has ended, and

(iv) paid for at the same time as the meal is paid for[/quote:bfw10bkl]

I think it requires a whole different business model to the casual drinking thing.

Hey,
A bit late getting back but thanks everyone for the info and welcome!

I'm hoping to start up in Dublin,where I am currently living.Lived in London for 5 years and Berlin for 1 and really enjoyed the variety of micro brews and the like.
Thought to myself why not try to open a place with some sweet beers ala The Bull and Castle. But the exspense and red tape are a big why not!

I'm not exactly looking to brew or start a brewery as such but meant if it was possible to serve home brew beers on a very small scale on a monthly or weekly basis as a special type thing but I see now that one can only sell their brew if they have a brewers licence or brew it in a licenced brewery, so I guess that idea is out the window

I have seen mention of the "special restaurant licence" and kinda looks a little tricky for what I was hoping to do but a "Wine retailers on-licence" for a "Refreshment House" looks kind of interesting however again I know nothing about this. Anybody know anything baout this? It seems difficult finding solid resources for these things bar consulting a solicitor,which I can't afford at the moment.

At present this is still a rough diamond of an idea and Im just sussing out some ideas I've had or have been presented to me so I will be back with more questions no doubt and if anybody has any input at all please feel free to let me know.

In the end what I am hoping to achieve is a small bar/cafe that serves great beers on a rotating menu and great wines the same, good coffee, relaxed environment, no tv's or piped music.Some good simple food and maybe start an aperitivo revolution Italian style! And hopefully not have to get a pub licence..

It's a minefield, one carefully designed to protect the investment of those who have spent a fortune on a pub licence.

I like your idea Ivan and fair play to ya, once you get over the hurdle of selling beer, have a chat with some of the micro's here, they may be willing to do a mini batch on their pilot brewery of 100 ltr or so, that is if any of them have such.
Or come and talk to me in about a years time.
I firmly believe that if you want something bad enough, it will be yours. Don't give up, you will find a way.
