[quote:1ruy6xlu]Your gonna want a fridge as well, so another €250 unless you can score one for free[/quote:1ruy6xlu]

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this before, but under the WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) legislation there is an onus on vendors of electrical goods to take old versions from the purchaser.

(think the legislation is something along the lines that every retailer must either offer to take back the old kit in-store, or be part of the Distributor Take back Scheme and tell you where you can recycle it- but to be honest, not all of them "advertise" this fact)

I know a guy who owns an electrical goods shop and asked him if any half decent fridges came in would he put one by for me (with some details on how big etc).

Week later he delivered a perfectly workable fridge (lives across the road from me). Someone had decided to "upgrade" to a fancier style and legally he was obliged to take it off him. 6 homebrews as a thank you and the deal was done. Might be worth thinking about.

Before i spoke to my neighbour, I had been looking at other methods of procuring a fridge for free. One of the avenues that would be worth a look (for those based in Dublin, but other local authorities to my mind also run similar schemes).

It's called "Free trade" and it essentially is a swap forum- the onus on the person getting the freebie is to collect it. Have seen fridges before and worth a look (as long as you have someone who can pick it up). Worth getting the necessary dimensions to fit a corny.

Anyways, here's the website: [url:1dyb73cv]http://www.dublinwaste.ie/free_trade.php[/url:1dyb73cv]

The problem with these sites is people devote their time to answering these ads, they're are like modern day council cleanup scavengers
You klnow when the council run a cleanup once every few years, where you throw out your rubbish that you might usually have to rent a skip for. and people used to come around, usually in Hi ace vans and trailers, taking anything that my be worth something.

Anyway, the point is that you have to be very quick off the mark to pick up anything decent on dublin waste. I have used it to get rid of stuff in the past, and it is usually gone very quickly if it is worth anything at all.

Here's my suggestion for picking up a fridge, i've never tried it by the way.
A lot of the big electrical shops (like power city) have a big dumping ground (usually a skip or a big trolley) for electrical waste.
There's usually nothing stopping anyone from turning up and using it, whether you are buying something new or not.
You may be able to intercept an old fridge here. whether it be someone just using the service, or someone actually coming in to buy a fridge.
Might be handy if ya knew someone that worked there, or had the neck to ask someone that worked there about the possibility.

James, i agree. There's also a tendency for people to keep ads up on there AFTER said item has gone (maybe months afterwards).

But if people are looking for a free fridge, it's definitely an option- i had one secured until i got a call that i just had one delivered to my door. So, made it slightly easier for me

yes there was a big yard like this in limerick near us on the ballysimon road when I lived there. Lots of the fridges looked fine, problem is, no way of knowing if they work or not since many ppl upgrade appliances that still work, but many also buy new when the old ones go kaput.
