Seems to be easy to get an exemption though. I see people drinking on the street all over the city and the Guards don't bother them.

This is what I hate about Ireland. Scumbags drinking in the street will be left alone unless they are actively causing trouble, because if the Garda tried to stop them, there [b:1zpmfr2t]might[/b:1zpmfr2t] be trouble and nobody wants that. Even if they are moved on, they will just drink somewhere else and if caught and arrested for not doing as the Garda instructed, there would be hassle, shouting and swearing and for what? They end up in the station and (maybe) eventually in front of a judge. This is nothing new for them and will change nothing.

However, if we were to meet up and do the same in a nice picnic area in the Phoenix park, we would stand out as a large group drinking, but because we are not scumbags any authority figure who feels like exercising his power could safely tell us to stop. We would not cause trouble, nor will we just be found a few yards down the road doing it again. Our nicely planned day is ruined.

Anyone have a nice big garden?

Yeah, have to agree with you there. However, this is the case in the UK as well.

Hmmm maybe if we had a picnic and all wore tracksuits? Disguised as skangers as it were, mandatory uniform of Nike cap, tracksuit and no beer glasses allowed, we'd have to fill the beers from bottles into empty bud cans. Anyone who smokes would have to break their cigarettes up and roll them into extra long ones. We could also look into a bulk buy of sovereign rings in Argos, the cops would run a mile....simples <!-- s;) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt=";)" title="Wink" /><!-- s;) -->
