Really Cool Idea: Microbrewery "Group Brew" 16 years 2 months ago #1

I just found out that a brewery in Kenosha, Wisconsin (Flatlander's) has a "Group brew" one Saturday every 4 months. -The first 50 people to sign up, pay $20 and walk through the process of making a beer in the brew house with the brewer; everyone gets to take home 5 gallons of wort with them and an adequate amount of yeast to finish fermenting their "group brew". -How cool is that?

What a great way to encourage home brewers and give them a taste of the "big time". -Now I wish I was still in Wisconsin in March....

I've read about a few places doing that kinda thing, even in Germany (although I think you get the finished product, not the wort). I think it's a nice idea.

Would there be licensing issues in Ireland with this kind of thing?

If you're giving out wort, I don't think so. And if you're giving out finished beer in big enough quantities you're covered by your brewery licence as well, I think.

there was an article in BYO about a homebrew club that 'clubbed' together to buy a large setup, and once a month a dozen or so (maybe less) pitched in for the day and split the wort after the boil. Nice idea. Problem is, space, and money. The brewery thing is a better idea. Which one of our micros would do this do you think?

I have wondered about the wort thing often in the context of Brew It Yourself[/url:24wdv1xr]

At what point does the wort become alcohol?
