Charlie Papazian's opinion is that the only common thread connecting all successful microbreweries is...... (drum roll) an absolute passion for craft brewed beer.

(Should come as no suprise.) Does anyone think that the Irish Govt would have more of a passion for promoting Irish Craft beer than an independent owner? (I certainly don't think so...)

It would make sense to run them for the benefit of the Irish economy by stocking those pubs with beer, cider and spirits made in Ireland. Not necessarily craft beer, but certainly beer brewed here.

However, running 200 London pubs would require a lot of expertise. Then you also have to consider how the British government and public (read newspapers) would react to the Irish government doing this.

Much less trouble just to sell them and take what money they can get, which I doubt will cover the outstanding debt.

Specifically the government, or Irish ownership generally? I mean, there doesn't seem to have been an outcry when Glasgow's august Wellpark Brewery -- older than Guinness -- fell to the Tipperary bog trotters last year.
