Just wondering does anyone know if beer could be made from that Ovaltine in your cupboard along with a sachet of baking yeast, and maybe a few hops aswell?
has anyone tried this or used Ovaltine/malt drink to carbonate etc. Now I'm thinking like that hairy lad from River Cottage aren't I??

I'd have to vote no. I'm sure ovaltine has all sorts of other stuff in it that a brewing-grade malt extract wouldn't.

I had a go at one of those Vitamalts last year. All the parts were there on the label including hops. Turned out pretty bland in the end. I have a bottle left if anyone is brave enough.

Somewhat similarly, one of the oriental shops on Mary Street in Dublin sell 330ml bottles of "SuperMalt" (see <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="www.supermalt.com/?id=43">www.supermalt.com/?id=43).

I also toyed with the idea of adding hops, yeast etc and seeing how it turned out...but chickened out. <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt="" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: -->

The drink has a weird taste: a bit like a bland version of Guinness, stacked full of sugar...oh yeah, and no alcohol, of course!
