TOPIC:

Coors to become a significant player in the Irish market. 16 years 6 months ago #1

This is not a new news story[/url:3rzwub9q] but what does it mean for us?

Will it be bad, will it mean nothing at all or will it possible create interest in craft beer?
The one interesting thing from the article is "their portfolio of world beers"

We have already heard that blue moon is available in an off license on the Navan road so will any of their other "craft beers" be pushed?

I for one would see that is a good thing, if it gets craft beers known to more of the population.

It could also be a double edged sword and see Coors owned craft beer push out Irish craft beer.... but I am hoping this is good news.
Then again it may mean nothing at all to craft beer in Ireland.

I really can't see it meaning a lot for craft beer in Ireland. If you think Grolsch and Caffreys are craft beers then you don't have a clue what Craft Beer is about and are unlikely to transfer to beer that actually tastes of something.

I think any sort of diversity is good, but as we've seen, the Irish market seems to have an endless capacity to support crap lager.

This seems to be just about Carling, which they spend a fortune on in the UK and which was once a big brand in Ireland. I'm guessing they may want to take Coors Light back when that contract expires -- depending on whether they make more money from importing it from the UK and selling direct, as against taking Heineken's licence fee as handy money.

I doubt we'll see a big new range of beers any more than Irish Tescos are comparable with UK ones for beer diversity.

Edit: But hey, we'll have an address in Maynooth to write to to demand White Shield <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->

Edit edit: Kasteel Cru is at saturation point on the UK market. I can see them wanting to do the same here.

More details here[/url:3n2ah05w].

We're getting Caffrey's, apparently.

Could someone with contacts in Gleeson's ask if they'd mind awfully getting a tray or two of White Shield shoved on to the back of the truck behind the kegs? Ta.
