ICB on Grow it Cook it Eat it 16 years 6 months ago #1

A nice chap called Michael Lemass popped over and stuck a microphone on me while I went though a brew day. The result is now out on growitcookiteatit.ie/category/program-8/

Got a fairly good plug for ICB in too.

Wow, loads of pics!

Just looking at the way you use the muslin to hold the grains. Could I do the same to use it as a hop bag?

The pictures are enough to make the mouth water!

Nice work.

Would be interested to know how you wired up that ATC-800 controller to the fridge and also what you did to keep the fermenter airtight with the temp probe stuck in it

[b:i7uh3pse]Atticus:[/b:i7uh3pse] I suppose you could do the same to filter out hops, but it is best to let your hops circulate as freely as possible. I use a copper pipe hop strainer and am very happy with the results.

[b:i7uh3pse]mezamo:[/b:i7uh3pse] I have the atc-800 fitted in a junction box, with two standard power sockets in the same junction box. The atc-800 switches on the "cooling" power socket, which I have the fridge plugged into, if the measured temperature rises a degree above the target temperature and switches it off if it drops back to the target temp. It does the same with the heating side, which I used to plug a heating belt into, but I have since found that the yeast generates more than enough heat all by itself.

The stainless steel drum I use as a fermentor has a hole in the lid for a standard bung. I use a stopper thermowell, which is a standard bung with a stainless steel pipe fitted into it. That way I actually lower the probe into a stainless pipe which is in the beer, but the probe itself never comes into contact with the beer.
