WHO Plan to Rein in Drinking 16 years 6 months ago #1

This is about Kenya, but the WHO seem is talkning globally. allafrica.com/stories/200910190048.html

"In a campaign strategy that could go the tobacco way, the global organisation urges nations to consider various ways of reducing access to alcohol, including governments monopolising retail outlets, regulating sales to patrons who are already drunk and selecting non-drinking days."

All stuff that has worked really well everywhere it has been tried. That's why we are such moderate drinkers as indeed is all of Scandinavia.

I really should stop reading this stuff. I'm just upsetting myself.

"[b:2taoliun]regulating[/b:2taoliun] sales to patrons who are already drunk"?

"You can have a pint while you're lying on the floor, but you [i:2taoliun]must[/i:2taoliun] promise to drink it slowly."

We have two of these already, Christmas Day and Good Friday, and in fairness, as a nation we do tend to take it a bit easier on the aul drink on those days.

Prohibition and restriction never works. It's attitude to social drinking that tends to make a difference. In most European countries it's socially unacceptable to be hammered in public. That's not the case in Ireland or the UK.

All that happens when you try to cut back on the availability is that people go crazy cos they think they are missing out.

Increasing prices and restricting availability leads to binge drinking, which they try discourage by increasing prices and restricting availability. Want to know where our binge drinking culture comes from? I think it's fairly obvious.
