West India Pale Ale? 16 years 6 months ago #1

A chara,

Martyn Cornell, author of Amber, Gold and Black writes:" Some brewers made West India Pale Ale: this appears to have been an Irish speciality, with William Lane & Co of the South Gate Lane Brewery, Cork, advertising West India Pale Ale alongside "Mild, Bitter and XX Ale, Export and Bottling Stout and all Kinds of Porter" in the latter half of the 19th century."

I'm looking for information on this beer (West India Pale Ale) and on the Lane Brewery of Cork which was purchased by Beamish and Crawford in 1901.

Any help appreciated-

Barnard has a chapter on the Southgate Brewery in [i:27sa02bn]Noted Breweries of Great Britain and Ireland[/i:27sa02bn] (1891). He mentions that it was founded in 1758 on the site of part of South Gate Gaol. It later took over Drinan's brewery and expanded into their premises. The first steam engine in Cork was installed at Lane's in 1798.

The only beer Barnard mentions is their export stout, which is shipped around the world. If the brewing records were kept they'd have passed to Beamish & Crawford in 1901, and then to the Cork city archive[/url:27sa02bn] which has all the Beamish papers, though they're not yet properly organised. That's probably your best hope for finding out about West India Pale Ale.

I was able to find the Barnard book on the web (saor):

Perhaps a visit to Cork will be required!
