Hows it going fellas,

Just stumbled across the site today while trying to source glass demijohns for brewing cider...

nice to see theres plenty of people keeping it real in the beer world (a rare thing in this country, unfortunately)

Wonder if anyone had any thoughts on using PET for fermenting cider, or is it unadvisable? i.e. does it pick up the flavor of the container?
used PET containers before whilst brewing beer, wasn't entirely happy, but it could have been down to a million other things!

Anywayz apart from this, a good place to buy glass demijohns, cause i just broke 2, hence the above question...
cheers.

As in a plastic taste?
I wouldn't imagine so, especially if the PET container is foodsafe.

You're past experiences were probably down to either using an old container or a container that wasn't designed for food stuffs.

As always though, glass is always better than plastic.

Plenty of people ferment in PET or PP vessels with no problem. As long as it's food grade it won't impart any flavours.

The problem with plastic containers, especially old ones, is that they can harbour spoilage bacteria. Glass or stainless is better for this reason, but as I said, many people make top notch beer and cider in plastic.

As to glass demijohns TheHomebrewCompany.ie[/url:281pivk8] seem to be out at the moment and homebrewwest.com[/url:281pivk8] only seem to do plastic ones. thehomebrewcentre.com[/url:281pivk8] seems to be your best bet for glass or if you are in Dublin Grape N Grain[/url:281pivk8] may be able to help you.

Powers in Arklow used to have glass demijohns - just over the bridge and turn left, they are on the right hand side.
