Dublin pub breached code on drink promotions 16 years 8 months ago #1

A south Dublin pub has been found to be in breach of a national code of practice on alcohol promotions.

The Portobello Bar has been advertising all pints for €3 between the hours of 3pm and 7pm every day.

A member of the public complained about the ad to MEAS, the body set up by the drinks industry to promote responsible enjoyment of alcohol.

MEAS found that the promotion at the Portobello could encourage binge-drinking, drunkenness or drink-driving.

So does this mean that all of these places selling alcohol more reasonably are now going to have to stop again? So some bloody do-gooder is going drive the price of drink up AGAIN, just as it was starting to come down after years of gouging. Pah.

If the Portobello is open before 3 -- and I think it is -- then the promotion is more seriously in breach of the law banning happy hours. I think.

Ah, so if they'd said something like "Cheap drink until 7pm" rather than "cheap drink from 3-7pm" it'd be ok? <!-- s:roll: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_rolleyes.gif" alt=":roll:" title="Rolling Eyes" /><!-- s:roll: -->

Further info: [url:4kd28pj8]http://breakingnews.ie/ireland/pub-hits-out-at-ban-on-cheaper-pints-423857.html[/url:4kd28pj8]
Summary : 2 euro a pint DAYS is fine, but 3 euro a pint for a few HOURS is not. Go figure.
Meanwhile, the VFI is looking for cheaper pints : [url:4kd28pj8]http://breakingnews.ie/ireland/vintners-seeks-government-action-to-boost-pub-trade-423859.html[/url:4kd28pj8]
"The VFI, which is holding a meeting in Dublin today to discuss the situation, is calling on the Government to cut VAT rates to 15% in order to help publicans survive."

Seems crazy. Heard one of the VFI or IVA or whoever they are on the radio today talking up the option of rolling back on the drink driving laws with regards to the max alcohol level in your blood. When asked abotu charging 6bills a pint they couldnt comment.

So it's fine to put your prices up every half hour from 11pm and hide the price list that says it but you can't mention your prices on big signs....who is the idiot that made these laws? DO they live in the real world...On one hand they tell us to shop around...be patriotic....but no signage of lovely deals. <!-- s:x --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_mad.gif" alt=":x" title="Mad" /><!-- s:x -->
