Sazlburg? 16 years 9 months ago #1

Heading to Salzburg during the week for the football but due to the vagaries of the Ryanair pricing system it costs me half as much to stay an extra night so I reckon I might spend my extra day in the pubbie. And if I'm in the pubbie I figure I'd try and make it a decent one. So in that spirit, has anyone any recommendations where one can avail of Salzburg's good beer?

But one place you should not miss is Augustinerbräu Kloster Mülln, probable the best beer garden in the world absolutely amazing place!

As Oblivious said , the Müllner Brau is excellent , Beer Mecca for me . it really is an experience and the beer is nectar.

Stiegl is the local commercial brew in Salzburg, it's a bitter dry lager as I recall , but not bad at all.

Salzburg is a very commercialised tourist town ( Sound of Music themed , Mozart is the local hero , the local chocolates are Mozart Kugeln . Pretzels are lovely from street stalls and about the size of your head , good for salty treat between pubs. ) But pretty charming anyway . Any pub should have decent beer , But I'm not overly fond of Zipfer . You may have to try different pubs for different beers as tradition in Austria is for single beer pubs , rare to have a big selection.

The brewery is an absolute must see. I have dreams about living in Salzburg just to be able to direct people towards it.

The beer is dispensed from a proper wooden barrel, and is actually tapped with a mallet and a wooden tap. You are required to wash out your tankard under a fountain before you get another beer, and the selection of food around the beer hall is just spectatular. I truly love that place.

The Augustinerbrau garden is indeed fab - but you're lucky to be going in the summer. Having initially been there in Sept 2001 on a fine late summers day and loving it, we had a couple of days in Salzburg in Feb 2008 after a snowboarding trip, and it just wasn't the same.

There's a good run down of places here:

I would definitely recommend the walk out to no. 8 Weissbierbrauerei Bernd Tobsch (AKA "Die Weisse") which is now pretty huge and very lively on the weekend. Nearby is s´Kloane Brauhaus which is smaller, but they are really really friendly.

Have fun <!-- s:-) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":-)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:-) -->
