The best line on this I've seen came from drinks writer Fiona Beckett recently:

I think the problem with beer marketing is the vicious circle of it being declared a male product, therefore marketed to men, thereby becoming a male product. Marketeers find this neat and workable so regard beer for women as a whole separate niche. It looks better on graphs that way, and is chargeable separately.
