Weaver’s Gold Blonde Ale –

Beer Style - Gold Ale

Alcohol by Volume - 4.5% ab.v.

Brewer /

Brand Owner - Clanconnell Brewing Company

Country of Origin - Northern Ireland.

On a recent trip to Lurgan, this new bottle of beer caught my eye on a visit to on of ‘The Wine Company’s’ off-licence. Weaver’s Gold is a new Blonde Ale – the batch number on the bottles that I got suggest that these bottles are from the second batch of beer brewed.

Weaver’s Gold presents with a rich gold colour, and a full, tight-laced head. On the palate, the beer balances a malt sweetness with a distinct citric (lime) character. There is a lingering aftertaste with the beer, and a hint of smokiness in the background of the flavour of the beer.

The story on which the brand owners have built this brand was one of the things that caught my attention. The story goes that the brewery is named after the lands Clanconnel, county Down – an area which was named for Conaill, son of Caolbadh, King of Ulster. Caolbadh was an ancestor of Aongus, son of Aidith, from whom the clan Magenis (MacAonghus) took its name. My own name – McGuinness, is MacAonghusa in Irish – so it looks like six degrees of separation has brought me to a beer ultimately named after one of my ancestors!

Clanconnel Brewing Company is Ireland’s newest craft brewing company. This first beer was launched on 9th January 2009 – we wish them every success with their new beer
