Heading down to a wedding next week in Spanish point,
Does anyone know if it's worth popping out to BEB?
And if not, is there any other good beer out that way? I'll give them a ring closer to the time, but thought I'd check here first!!
(I'll be going home through limerick, so that rules out hooker in Galway city! although if I win the row, we might go down via tigh neachtan(although they were out of hooker last time I was there!!)

They have hooker in one of the bars in UL but technically you are supposed to be a member and with the bulk of the students away they are only open late on a Wednesday. If you have trouble I'm usually around and could always sign you in.

By the time I get to Limerick I will have the wife and brat with me and a three hour drive ahead, so I'll only get away with a quick one!
I wouldn't put you to that hastle just for one pint, thanks a mill for the offer though!

Hi all,

I live not too far from Biddy Early and used to love going there, but things have changed, so I will try to shed some light on some the questions above.

As TheBeerNut says, it was put up for sale in 2007 (if not before) and they stopped brewing around that time. I heard at the time that the brewery side of the business was bought out by a micro brewery below in Cork, but they have since stopped brewing Biddy Early (under that name anyway). The pub itself sold recently and has since changed names, so the Biddy Early Pub Brewery is no more. Now it's just another pub.

At their height they had Blonde Biddy (lager), Red Biddy (ale), and Black Biddy (stout) all available on draught and in 500ml bottles. They always had problems with the draught pulling high - like seriously high (particularly the Red)! As a result, they stopped doing draught at least 2 years ago, and the bar tender at the time cited wastage as a factor in that decision. I always thought that part of the reason for this may have been the lack of flow (low turnover) on the lines, as the locals only drink the boring old regular stuff, but after a few pints it settled down and got better and better!

If you're heading down this way and want to go to a quality boozer try Flanagans in Lahinch. They have a superb selection of world beers both in bottles and on draught. One word of warning: Flanagans Pub is pricey and previously won an "award" for most expensive pint outside of Dublin! It's still worth a visit, but around the corner is "The Oldest Pub & Publican in Lahinch", Tom Frawleys, which is an old world pub, with Tom (in his late 80s!) running the pub single handedly 7 days/nights a week! The only tap there is Guinness, but it's easily the best pint around, with the barrel directly under the tap, so a nice short draw, but no chiller so not the best on a warm day. He also weighs & bags pounds of loose leaf tea, if you like tea. Heres a link to one of several YouTube videos people have uploaded of Tom Frawley's:

I wish I had better news re: Biddy Early, but that's the craic!

thanks for that, Lahinch will be the ideal spot to break the journey from Galway!!
Very sad about BEB, the sonner this country starts appreciating good beer the better,

Fell out of the porterhouse last week courtesy of Messers bock, brainblasta & Hilden Ale
(But have vague memorys of everyone else at the bar ordering stella & Coors!!)
