Made it up North on Saturday and spent an ejoyable, if somewhat decadent afternoon/evening trying out all the tips for Belfast pubs - thanks again! Made it to pretty much all of them, and tried a good variety of brews between myself and grainne:
- John Hewitt - Hilden Silver and Molly's Chocolate Stout on hand pull. Both great, especially the stout.
- Duke of York - great looking pub, loved the decor but had overlooked Silenus's comments regarding whiskey on the other Belfast thread. Was a bit too early for the grain, beer choice not great - they had McCardles on draught which I don't mind in a bottle off the shelf now and again, but this was far too cold to even appreciate
- The Spaniard - wandered into this place for food which turned out to be super. They only had the macro Irish beers on tap, but Scheiderweisse and Erdinger in bottles amongst others.
- Whites Tavern - a welcoming looking place, but alas couldn't find anything worth drinking on tap or in bottles...maybe didn't look hard enough?
- Bittles Bar - really liked this place. All the local Whitewater and Hilden brews in bottles, grainne went for the Titanic Quarter beer, Clotworthy Dobbin for myself.
- The Garrick - good range of bottles. Tried the Belfast Ale and Lager between us. Found the lager nice and refreshing at this stage of the day, the Ale a slightly less flavoursome version of the Clotworthy Dobbin.
- The Crown - one word: "wow". The description in IGG's book possibly doesn't do it justice. Nice buzz with folks in for a pre-theatre drink. Enjoyed the Crown and Glory, and The Mill, both from Whitewater I believe.
- Auntie Annie's - found this one having decided against a drink in the Wetherspoons, which by that stage of the evening was looking like the 7th level of hell. Not great either, but Erdinger Dunkels available in bottles to finish the night off.
Overall, definitely worth the trip for a different variety of decent beers. I think the most we paid was £3.50 a pint, so the lower cost is a nice bonus too. Dropped into Sainsbury's in Lisburn on the way back down and picked up a range of bottled ales, weiss's etc.
Thanks again for the tips folks,
