So does our legal system

I meant in a more practical sense. You can ban alcohol adverts on RTE but our kids are still going to see Bud advertised on CH4.

Very true

By and large, the UK terrestrial TV channels we get here have Ireland-specific advertising content. Plus, Ireland's big three brewers tend not to utilise ads made for the UK. C&C do, but then their product is called something else there.

I've never seen a "Noitulove" or "Brilliant!" Guinness ad, but everyone in Britain is very familiar with them.

Footballers' jerseys, I think, would be the only real mass media threat to a ban in Ireland.

And they advertise Bulmers, not Magners...

+1 here for the ban on alcohol drinks, but I also wonder about the efficiency of the method. Coming from a country where there is a ban on alcohol and cigarettes advertising, depending on the media, I don't think it's highly successful.

My guess is that advertisement will only affect the choice of drink (like this alcopop rather that one), and not change the consumption habit. I doubt teens start drinking because the ad with the dominos was cool.

This is a generational thing, I suppose. It'll have little impact on the current drinkers and those just opting into the culture, but children who might start drinking in a decade or more can be expected to have a different attitude to alcohol than their parents. Is it possible the government might actually do something forward thinking? That is scary.
