Falling Malt Prices? 17 years 8 months ago #13

I'd doubt it. The price of a tonne of basic agricultural produce would be set by the market, and Greencore and such would offer prices that would be, in large, dictated to them by the available supply.

The amount Greencore sell it for though would vary widely by beer, as the likes of Guinness would be able to avail of the best prices due to the huge volumes they order.

Gah! As stated above, this was a (clearly) poor atempt at sarcasm. I knew I should have used more smilies... <!-- s:roll: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_rolleyes.gif" alt="" title="Rolling Eyes" /><!-- s:roll: -->

Or are we just meant to go "Ooo, 1c isn't very much. No farmer can live on 1c. Naughty Diageo"?[/quote:28uc6cct]

Yes. That's exactly the reaction they want. To complain they only get €200 a tonne (or whatever it is)would mean nothing to most people. Putting it as a percentage of a pint is a great headline-grabbing argument/campaign.

The cost to produce it is rising, but Diageo can basically name their price, such is their dominance.

With the cost of malt at €200/1000kg, and the farmer gets 1 cent per pint, there is only 50g of malt in each pint. either my sums are off or someone is making up the 1 cent per pint to get headlines, should it not be more, 2kg for 5 gallons

That price i believe is for for un-malted malting barley that is used as roasted barley and a flaked or cereal mash, which will make up some where between 29-30% of the grist.

I am not sure that malted barley is going for from green core.

But i do find it funny that we are one of the world best producers malted barely and only produce malt no specialist malts
