Whats the best way to get my beer into Ireland? 17 years 9 months ago #1

Just wondering. I'm going to be home for christmas. My brother who now lives out in Oz will be home too. This will be the first christmas home in 5 years for the whole family together.

I was going to try to bring some of my beer across.

What do you think is the best way to get it there?

We are from Letterkenny, so I can ship it to my mother in Donegal, but I know they go for the VAT with our christmas presents when we ship them home.

My wife is from Enniskillen, so we also have the address in Norn. Irn too, if it cuts the vat.

Or do you think wrapping properly and putting them in the suitcase will be OK.

ARe there any laws I should be wary of. We bring sausages and stuff back out when we visit, and just don't declare them, but the metal bottle caps might be easier detected in the screening?

I was hoping to maybe bring home a case worth of beer, of various types. I should have porter, pale ale, hefe and a brown, so was thinking a sixpack of each.

Any tips or suggestions?

Cheers

They shouldn't charge you VAT. VAT is based on the price of an item so, as you made it yourself, the price is 0. I mean, if your Aunt knitted you a sweater would they charge you VAT on it?

However, customs may have a problem with it, I really don't know what the legality of shipping homebrew into Ireland is. Maybe you could email customs and excise and ask them. <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="www.revenue.ie/index.htm?/services/customs.htm">www.revenue.ie/index.htm?/services/customs.htm

Seeing as you're coming over anyway a well packed suitcase might be the way to go. As long as it's not in your hand luggage it won't fall foul of the liquid restrictions. You'll probably have to stump up for excess baggage though.

Does the pressure drop in the lugage compartment, would it make a mess. I would find out about shipping, I would think the costs may be excessive due to the weight. Sorry but I'm no help to ya <!-- s:( --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_sad.gif" alt=":(" title="Sad" /><!-- s:( -->
