A beer starbucks? 17 years 9 months ago #1

This article is about how starbucks actually helps coffee shops

[quote:33vb1ut7]That'll put the fear of God into pretty much anyone, so the owner called a friend, who happened to run the Seattle's Best Coffee chain. The friend reassured him this was going to be the best thing that ever happened to him, and indeed it was. Sales increased so much that he started following Starbucks around and putting in new stores next to theirs.

Why did this happen? Apparently because Starbucks increases the size of the market for premium coffee. And those new coffee drinkers sooner or later move beyond Starbucks to see what other shops might have to offer.[/quote:33vb1ut7]

So Starbucks gets people to think of coffee as something other then a caffeine delivery mechanism and gets them used to paying a lot for it. Could there be a Starbucks of beer? Why won't people pay twice the usual price for a good beer the way they will with coffee?

I guess someone like Wetherspoons could be the Starbucks of beer, but their attempt to break into the Irish market was blocked.

And people, myself included, won't pay twice the usual price for beer in pubs, as the price is high enough as it is. A tenner for a pint? I don't think so.
Off-licences are a different story, of course.

If you want to trade up to higher-quality alcohol you buy wine instead, as that's what'll be in the bar, restaurant or off licence.

I agree I wont pay a tenner a pint either. But if you asked me a few years ago would I pay 5 euro a cup of coffee I would have said no too.

Wetherspoons always seemed more for food to me. Maybe that is the way to make beer classy. Tie it in with food the way the bull and castle does.
