I had a couple of thoroughly enjoyable pints of Friar Weisse in Paddy Cullen's this afternoon. It's similarly dry, quite hoppy, and nearly more of a wit than weisse.

Edit: And a week later I discover a receipt in my pocket that says I was paying just €3.80 a pint for it

Also went looking for Hooker in Bewley's Hotel, but couldn't see a tap on the bar

Hmm, yes, perhaps edging [i:3gp4v8du]slightly[/i:3gp4v8du] towards that territory. It's sweet, with a slight citrusy hint. Would love to know what's in it. But I'm not sure if they've heard of Wit here Besides, this particular one is stated as following the Rheinheitsgebot, so not intended to taste like a Wit

Oh, clickable photos added above to show how bored I really am

I see you managed to buy your new glassware from the same place as the Bull & Castle. I suppose it's the standard over there.

Ok, Pinkus Original Alt. I tried this on tap in the Pinkus bar after last Christmas, and it was really tasty. This is a bit, I dunno, watery maybe. Not much body, but the flavour is pleasent enough. Straightforward malt. It looks a bit paler than what I think I should expect from an Alt, and this was something I noted last time I tried it too.

Worth a try, easy to drink, but not much to it really.

Roger Protz lists Duckstein in his 300 Beers to Try Before You Die[/url:3tq7fcop] book. He describes the "fruity, raisen-like aroma with rich malt and spicy hops. The fruit notes dominate the mouth with earthy hop resins and biscuity malt. The finish is spicy, dry, slightly vinous, with bitter hoppy notes and is wonderfully refreshing" I'm sorry Roger, I just don't get all of that

I was really expecting something almost spectacular. Maybe my mouth is jaded, so I'll reserve complete judgement. However, at this point I'll just say that it does have a [i:3tq7fcop]somewhat [/i:3tq7fcop]fruity aroma, and it's certainly more complex and full bodied than the Pinkus Alt. This particular bottle seems a bit flat (that head disappeared minutes after the photo was taken, and it's lifeless), so maybe the low carbonation just isn't lifting all that wonderful aroma and flavour to the heights it's supposed to. Still, it's flavoursome and has a good mouthfeel. Just not all that I was expecting. In fact, my next door neighbour said Duckstein was one of his favourites, and it was certainly the most expensive of all the beers I bought, at 12.50 for 8 bottles. Well, he considered it expensive!

I'll revisit this with a clean palate, and a different bottle another day. At least I'm one more beer closer to dying!
