It looks like we'll be going for a different kit now, so we'll need to do the maths again and then let people know what region of IBU to aim for, although I think 25-35 seems reasonable.[/quote:zbvqc7yx]
That would seem to be about right on the ibu front, im pretty sure almost none of the lager/golden ale kits would go much above 25 ibus.
What kit is going to be used, i'd offer my own services as an all grain brew but im a bit far away to get involved.
BTW are all the beers being fermented with the same yeast, it can be a major determinate of flavour especially when you go beyond the usual dry yeasts.

Ah right missed that post, so the euro lager thats about 18 IBUs so maybe the others should look to do about 20-25 tops otherwise you might be able to pick them out on bitterness alone.
The yeast that comes with that kit is S-189 (a proper lager yeast) AFAIK, has the beernut got temp control, if you trying brewing this without it'll probably be completely out of whack (it'll be buttery as all hell), maybe nottingham would be the way to go, it would certainly keep everything the same across the board.
Thanks for the offer IPA i'll might just take you up on it sometime.

I think I'll use this as an excuse to call in to my LHBS and get a look at lager kit specs and instructions. I will get two of something appropriately generic, with room temp fermentation instructions, and report back.

My (admittedly underused) maths make out the Euro lager at
340 IBU * (1.7l / 23l) = 25.13 IBU,
so 25 - 30 IBUs would be the target range to aim for (I think!)

Sorry to be a pain IPA <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt="" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: --> but thats on the basis of weight it should be calculated on the basis of volume, they ain't the same as the concentrated sugars in the kit weigh a lot more than water.
The volume is 1.25 Litres so it 340X(1.25/23L) = 17-18 IBUs.
