The state of German beer 13 years 10 months ago #1

There was a piece on German TV recently about how German brewers have been resting on their laurels and how their mainstream beer has sleepwalked into mediocrity.

The video has been posted to this blog[/url:1foz2czf], and there's also an English-language summary of the whole piece.

The observations aren't new, but this is the first time I've seen them come from inside Germany. Hopefully it bodes well for German brewing.

Good to see they might finally be doing something about this. Few years back German beers would have been my go-to buy I don't bother anymore.

Hmm. Reminds me a bit of the Brits, specifically the English... some crystal malt and a handful of Goldings and yer laughin'. Not any more.

I did a quick interview with a German Beer writer the other day on the topic of Local Beers. He reckoned that we were leading the way in diversity and quality, but he also acknowledged the Germans are way behind and are afraid to step out of their comfort zone. Lets see what they come up with.

I don't really know about that. I think that as in computer software we're the 51st state. We're certainly closer to Boston than Berlin, but I don't think brewers here are breaking any moulds.

I think he meant it in terms of thinking outside the box. We've come a long way from the usual set of beers in a small amount of time.
