Does "ale" == "Smithwicks" or something else?

To the great unwashed ale == Smithwicks, but for those who have ever travelled it also includes "that piss they drink in England."
(I should qualify that. When telling people about pale ales over the weekend, I had one or two equate pale ale with the unpleasant drinks only available in England. This stereotype existed 25 years ago, and I'm not surprised it still does)

That's nothing there was a guy who tried Metalman's new wheat beer and came back a while later describing how he really liked this "lager" vs. some of the "ales" that he had tried there that day... -It took all my strength just to say "yea, good, huh?" instead of explain just how confused he was to mistake a spiced, cloudy wheat beer for a lager.
As far as I could tell his classification system was "beer that I like == "lager" and beer that I don't like == "ale"". (Wait, you were there when that happened, weren't you?)
I think I'd almost call my product "Irish Golden" or "Irish Pale" and I'd just avoid the word "ale" entirely because of widespread consumer confusion.

Absolutely. I always maintained that to some people ale is a four letter word.
