Craft Beer Survey Results ! 14 years 7 months ago #1

So as some will know we conducted a survey on first day of the All Ireland Craft Beerfest. We had some people collecting results / interviewing people - with Emmetg, Vinny(blow in) and Andrew deserving special mention.
It was a very simple survey which originally served as an ice breaker when talking to strangers.

The Question was

- Position these beers in your order of preference
[list:19e5gulg][i:19e5gulg]Lager/Pilsner
Stout
Ale
Weiss Beer/Wit Beer
Pale Ale / IPA (Strong Ale)
Smoked / Imperial Stout.[/i:19e5gulg][/list:u:19e5gulg]

The response was fantastic we got about 100 replies - of which only 7 spoiled.

I was quite surprised to see the stout category do so well and the Larger and Pilsner do so poorly - that said this wasnt your typical 'euro a can of larger' crowd in fairness.

The most popular first choice was Stout

with Ale and Pale Ale tied for second and I appreciate that there was some split vote here

The Wit/Weiss was most popular third choice.

Now say we rank the positions and award points
according to position - 10 7 4 2

You get this - (click the image twice)

Stout, Ale and IPA tied first with wit/weiss shading pilsner for fourth.

Right - so what to make of all this -

Its interesting to see that a lot of microbrewies produce a pale ale, then a stout and then move onto something else - have they done the research and produced according to their market or has the market being influenced by the mircobrewers?
One thing is for sure - the market for Smoked and Imperial stouts aint going to set the world on fire.

Thanks again for everyones help- if anyone want more detailed results please email/PM me for the spreadsheet.

Regards

James

fast results!
it was a great way to get people chatting once they were in the doors and i would suggest doing another at similar events. one of the key facts to it being so sucessful was its small size and simple and short question.

the results are intresting however i wonder if asked what there fav stout was i would imagine guinness would have been highest by a country mile.

another idea would be to suggest to the public coming in to fill out a survey after having a few beers to see how if any of there opinions have changed after trying beers at the event

Great work James. Well done on coming up with a really great way to interact with the attendees.

My maths on the night were a little flawed me thinks, but it was a huge percentage as surveys goes.

Sorry what's the definition of "ale" used in the survey?

Does "ale" == "Smithwicks" or something else?

Well the explaination used was - Ale was <5% and Pale Ale/IPA/APA was 'Strong Ale' >5% - like seirra nevada / imports - real hoppy beers etc -

Galway Hooker / Or / Metalman were all classed as Ale.

In hindsight - these catogories were a little too close.
