Monteith's Crushed Apple Cider 14 years 10 months ago #1

Disclaimer: There are LOADS of cider afficinados on this forum and I am not one of them; I've probably tried only 5 "real" ciders.

Now that the disclaimer is out of the way, this weekend I tried Monteith's "Crushed Apple Cider"$$ Monteith's is a New Zealand craft brewery and they make some pretty tasty beers and their cider is no exception. [edit] Except that cider isn't beer; I guess that's technically an exception, lol![/edit] It seems to be a proper natural cider with no added fake sugars; it's got a great "real cider" aroma and of course has that tartness of a real cider but isn't overly tart. The color borders on completely clear and it has plenty of carbonation. It's now officially my favorite cider but I'd love to hear the opinion of some more experienced cider drinkers.

-I found it at La Cornitas, the Mexican restaurant in the Dundrum shopping center.

The brand is owned by Asia-Pacific of Tiger fame, and almost all the beer is made at their Dominion Breweries industrial facilities on the north island.

I'll definitely check out the cider, though.

And an excuse to post my picture of the gents in the Monteith's brewery? Sure it is.

Urinals that automatically "sparge" when you step away; what will they think of next? lol!

So are they just a faux craft brewery setup by a big INTL brewer or were they a small craft brewery that just got bought out? (Not that it makes much difference, I'm just curious.)

Anyone else try the cider yet?

To be honest I couldn't tell the difference between macro and micro Monteith's beer. They're none of them world-shakers.

I'm excited any time I can get my hands on an NZ or Australia-made beer that's not Fosters. No availability when I'm back in the states and pretty hard-to-find here still. Australia is so huge I'd be afraid I'd still find it tough to get to try most of the microbrews even if I went there.

There's certainly a bit of novelty still for me with NZ and Australian beers.
