TOPIC:

A beer sampling evening in work 18 years 8 months ago #1

Right, have been asked to recommend a list of beers which would be considered 'unusual' to joey soap, for a sampling evening in work. About 10 beers or so, from various places, but available in bottles.
Personally I love hoppy beers, but I can't just pick 10 IPAs unfortunately, so here's what I've come up with as a reasonably accessible selection for most people. Any thoughts/comments/changes please don't be shy....

Goose Island IPA (USA)
Fraoch Heather Ale (Scotland)
Bitter and Twister (Scotland)
Messr Maguires Porter (Ireland)
Chimay Blue (Belgium)
Krušovické (Czech)
Boon Geuze (Belgium)
Watou Wit (Belgium)
Paulaner (Germany)
Hobgoblin (England)

n1mbus and I did a tasting evening in his office before I went away. We chose a Belgian theme, and people seemed to really enjoy it. They were amazed at the range of flavours.

Trying to remember what we had, but I think it went along the lines of

Hoegaarden
Our Dark Wit
Boon Framboise
Boon Geuze
Orval
Wesmalle Triple
Our Strong Dark Belgian Ale
(I may have missed one)

There was a BBQ after with Leffe Blonde as the general beer.

This was plenty of beer for a tasting for people who are not generally adventurous with their beer tasting. Be careful of overloading them with too many beers of different types as after a while they won;t taste anything Also set the order of the tasting to build up on the flavours.

How about picking a theme, like a country. It gives you an excuse to do another one

We plan to do another, probably using Irish beers. That'll be a real surprise for some, and will help promote Irish Craft Beers! (pity you can't get some in bottles though)

Nice list. How about introducing a twist on an established style like Young's Double Chocolate Stout? (mmmm).

Thanks for that, i hadn't considered the one-country theme myself.
Another thing I'm thinking of doing is organising it in the B&C - similar to the way we did our tasting, I'd hope that Geoff or Declan would be able to suggest 8 or so beers, provide samples for all and of course a bit of spiel about them, and then a free for all at the bar. This way we get Hooker on the list too, which will hopefully open peoples eyes. I introduced 4 friends to it last saturday and it went down a storm.

That sounds like a great idea and the list looks pretty good to me for an overall diverse experience. I suppose that you could choose a country theme as long as it as a country like Belgium that still provides enough range of falvours to keep all sorts of people interested. I think that I may suggest this for my firm too!
