Victory Storm King Imperial Stout 15 years 11 months ago #1

I was pleasantly suprised to find Victory Storm King Imperial Stout in Devney's on Saturday. (I was REALLY in the mood for an Imperial Stout.)

-If you like Star Anise, this is the stout for you!
It had way too much Anise flavor for me and not enough hopping. I've tried many of Victory's other beers but I was NOT happy with their Imperial Stout.

It's pretty common for the US microbreweries to put a little Star Anise in their Imperial Stouts for complexity (Old Rasputin as a BEAUTIFUL RIS that uses a small bit of anise that you don't really notice), but the anise in Storm King Imperial Stout is VERY noticable.

I had this a few weeks back also. I didn't like it either. For me it was way too bitter. I also thought that whatever hops they used didn't suit the beer at all. It was like they used some sort of citrusy hops which were at odds with the roasted malts.
Big thumbs down for me I'm afraid.

It's really sad, this beer used to get GREAT reviews and even some of the "professional" reviewers who have gone back and reviewed it again in the last year or so have downgraded their reviews and have generally been disappointed.

Although they're very different Imperial Stouts, Nogne and Brew Dog Paradox have my vote for best European Imperial Stout. Nogne is very hoppy and even a slightly citrusy hop and it works VERY well; Paradox is all malty, sweet whiskey flavor, but wonderful too.
