Pubs in Ireland aren't used to having to do something different to attract customers. Maybe the recession will get some of them to focus on how they can stand out from the crowd. It's just my perception but the Porterhouse with its unique offering seems to be doing a brisk trade any time I'm in there while most other pubs are noticeably quieter.

Standing out from the crowd would be a risky route for a lot of bars to go down at the moment. There is precious little business for all to share currently, and with big suppliers practically giving away domestic beer and spirits (there are several wars going on at the moment re; Vodka, Rum and regular beers) is easier to compete with your neighbour, than re-style you business and outlay precious cash reserves.

My point being, this is the wrong time for a business to rebrand, there is virtualy little new business to attract and current stocks are being reduced in price.
I feel that most places will stick with the current business model, and work on that.

It's funny, I was only thinking about this the other day after I tried a pint of Ór. At the moment they would certainly be taking business away from each but the more Micros producing the more awareness, and hopefully interest, will be created.

But yeah, Beernut is right when he says that having Ór (or any Micro brew) at the B&C is just preaching to the converted. I would love to see Micros in my local but I can't see it happening and as a result I don't bother with them and just head into town if I want to try something different.

But is that not in your interest to say that? Would you really want other bars in your vicinity competing against you with the same model?

Hell yeah, the more people attracted to one area, the bigger the footfall for us all to share. Competition is good for all.
