McEwan's No1 Champion Ale 16 years 3 weeks ago #1

So, my dad was up north to bring my nephew down dfor the weekend and he stopped in to one of the big supermarkets to collect some beer, along with his usual haul of the whitewater beers he brought home 6 bottles of McEwan's No1 Champion Ale, its a beer I never tried and I was very excited to hear that it was 3 bottles for £4 and he would be heading back up north today, needless to say I puit a big order in.

I was suprised how nice this beer was, dark ruby colour, rich malty aroma and the taste blew me away, dark caramel notes, rich fruity taste, a real beauty,

Anyone else like this beer, may attempt a clone in the next few weeks

I grabbed a bottle in Sainsbury's when I was in Edinburgh last year and also enjoyed it.

I was fully expecting to find sweet, malty Scottish ales everywhere in Edinburgh but this was one of only two Scottish ales that I managed to find; at 7.3% I consider it Doppel Bock's Scottish cousin.

Yeah, I didnt know it was 7.3% ABV until I was drinking my 4th bottle and wondering why I was a little fuzzy! <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->

I think I'll have to eventually get around to brewing a strong Scottish Ale/Wee Heavy with a REALLY long boil to maximize malliard reactions.

-A label with a cartoon goat with a long red Scottish beard and a kilt would appropriately describe the style connections to the revered Bock.

"Glaswegator"... Might have to work on the name...
