If micro beers pose any "threat" at all to the larger beers or them phantom "speciality" beers then it'll be down to the beer drinking market of consumers switching cause the brewers aren't really doing that great of a job at marketing their beers. There's probably a lot of "chicken and egg" what came first roundabout stuff to talk about.

Course the macros view the micros as a threat. Does anyone remember St James Gate brewery?

I'd say they're busting their ass marketing their products with the limited resources and limited distribution channels they have vs. the massive resources of macros.

Creating a great product is only half the battle. Telling the customer about the prduct and Getting the product to the customer are arguably the greatest challenges.

Without a doubt. If a small company (in any line of business) can't compete with the big boys in terms of advertising, or even t-shirts or beermats, what chance in hell do they stand in an open market.

The one thing about beer is that is sold in a social setting where people talk and promote what they think is best, whether they be staff of customers advising others on whats best. I think this is the huge difference between macro's & micro's. Who recommends Heineken or Smithwicks to anyone?

I'm not sure what chance micros have outside of a specialist beer setting the likes of Silenus place. I mean even there I'm sure the brunt of his turnover is still from the macros, the few times I've been there the other people at the table not of our party were drinking the usual swill.

Our local (the thirsty bull) did have porterhouse plain on tap, which I'm sure you'll all agree beats Guinness with a shitty stick, none the less they pulled the tap cos it wasn't selling.....sad but true.
