Milwaukee, Wisconsin Offlicense Round 1 16 years 2 months ago #1

Just got into Milwaukee today, I've got a few pretty good finds to get me started for the week:

New Glarus Brewing Company (New Glarus, Wisconsin):
1. Spotted Cow Ale (Flaked Barley, a little corn, 4.8% abv; yeast in bottle and cloudy)
2. Fat Squirrel Ale (Nut Brown Ale made from 6 different Wisconsin malts) 5.8% ABV
3. Stone Soup (5.3% ABV Abbey style ale)

Furthermore Brewing (Black River Falls, Wisconsin):
1. Furthermore Knot Stock (Amber colored, hopped-up beer flavored with Black Pepper) - Black pepper flavor is EXTREMELY mild; really doesn't add to the flavor but does warm the back of your tongue a bit.
2. "Three Feet Deep" - Stout made with Peat Smoked Malt; description: "This stout is a return to county Cork and the warth of the Irish hearth." (This will be my first peat-smoked beer, I'm excited!)

O'So Brewing (Plover, Wisconsin):
1. Hopdinger (The bottle doesn't say much, I'll post back comments later.)

Great Lakes Brewing Company: (Cleveland, Ohio)
1. Conway's Irish Ale (Ruby-colored Irish Red brewed according to the Rheinheitsgebot; World Beer Championships Gold Medal Winner)

I just got back from an off-license with the largest selection of beer I've EVER seen (and an utterly gigantic refridgerator)... Good start to the week for sure!

Have fun Adam.
Will have to head to Wisconsin next time I am in the Illinois/Michigan area.

San Francisco will do in June/July though <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->

Welcome to the midwest Adam!
If you get the chance to try some more Great Lakes Brewing Company offers, I recommend the Edmund Fitzgerald Porter and Christmas Ale among others.
I'd also suggest Founder's, New Holland, Bells, and Short's beer if you can get your hands on them!
Enjoy,
Jake

Definitely recommend Bells.

Thanks for the recommendations!

I've tried the Edmund Fitzgerald Porter, a bunch of Founders stuff (I seem to be one of the only people who doesn't like Breakfast Stout.), 3 New Holland beers (2 had an off flavor), love the Bell's stuff, never had Short's so I'll have to track it down. -Thanks for the tips!

I visited the Sprecher brewery in Milwaukee today.

Tasted:
[b:1me5um3q]Mai bock[/b:1me5um3q] (Ur Bock-style light bock; more hoppiness than any other bock I've ever had; very drinkable.)

[b:1me5um3q]Russian Imperial Stout[/b:1me5um3q] 8.5%, didn't have the level of roastiness that I like to see in a RIS, and was lacking in body and hoppiness, honestly a bit of a dissapointment.

[b:1me5um3q]IPA2[/b:1me5um3q] It's like you took the American Double IPA style and toned it down and make it more balanced like it was an English Double IPA (if such a style existed); unlike any IPA or Double IPA I've tried before, I prefer a hoppier, crazier DIPA, but I know a lot of people who would prefer this.

I brought a bottle of Dunkle Weizen & Barley Wine back with me to the hotel.

The dunkle weizen is pretty good but has a slight astringency and is a little estery for my taste. (Tastes like the dunkelweizen that I made with Weistephaner yeast fermented at the high end of the scale.)

I'm probably bringing the Barley Wine back home with me...

I tried to visit Lake Front brewery, too but it closes early.
