Old Leghumper Robust Porter 16 years 4 months ago #1

"Old Leghumper Robust Porter" from Thirsty Dog Brewing Company; Akron, Ohio. (I'm still in the US Midwest so I figure "when in Rome..."

Really unfortunately named beer here; won a World Beer Cup Gold Medal in 2002 and suprisingly enough seems like Brew Dog's Paradox Islay Stout's little brother. It has that really grainy, roasty, molasses taste that I absolutely LOVE about Paradox Islay stout. -Like you took an over-roasted chocolate malt and gave it the tiniest, tiniest touch of molasses.

It's 6.7% abv and has no barrel aging craziness like the Paradox, but there's just something great about that taste.

If anyone has any idea what accounts for the main flavor in the Paradox, let me know because I HAVE to try to make a porter with whatever it is.

-I'm going to keep a running list of the beers that I encounter that have this flavor, hoping that EVENTUALLY I'll figure out exactly what it is...

If you're in the Midwest US then try some Founder's, Bell's, New Holland, and Short's beers from Michigan if you can get your hands on them. Also, Great Lakes Brewing Co. from Ohio makes some great beers including a nice porter called Edmund Fitzgerald.

+1 on the Edmund Fitzgerald. Right up there with Sam Smith Taddy Porter.

Bells got me in to US craft beer a few years ago.
