Carlsberg's Jacobsen Range 17 years 10 months ago #1

Just finishing a bottle (750ml) of Jacobsen Dark Lager from Carlsberg, which I enjoyed thoroughly (5.8%). Very tasty. According to the taste wheel on www.jacobsenbeer.com, it's sweet and caramelly, (I also like Innis & Gunn!) with a soft and butterlike mouthfeel.

Seriously though, the taste wheel is useful. And the beer is tasty. Anyone else tried it? It's an old recipe of Carlsberg's much like the Brewhouse series that Guinness' did recently.

I'm not exactly sure what the "Burton Snatch" on the Aroma section of the taste wheel is, but several possibilities cross my mind...

I had a few taste wheels in the past (I did a wine tasing thingy, but don't tell anyone), and I thought they might be useful to help some people describe what they are tasting, as it's difficult to describe taste and smell sometimes. I seem to recall a certain other admin person telling me that they don't want words put into their mouth Possibly because it was full of beer, but there ya go

Never tried these, but would love to.

'Burton Snatch' is a sulphur smell that Burton beers tend to have and no doubt your mate's water too.

HC , where did you get your hands on that? they came in the country late '06, but are meant to be sold to the restaurant trade only.
They also have a brown ale, one of the best i ever tried, keep an eye for it.

I had the Jacobsen Brown Ale in the Schoolhouse hotel/restaurant last week.

This was one of the two 750ml bottles they had left. Since they are no longer advertising it, I did ask the barman to check the date. (Only when I was half-way through the bottle did I realise it was best before October 2007, not '08).

Very nice once again, well balanced example of the style. Slight oxidation notes, due to the age of the bottle, but still worth the price (€15), if anyone wants to get the last bottle!
