Just as well I know you don't have a Dublin accent. Tick and Ticker come to mind (a la Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels )

Not much to report on the beer side, but I fell in love with the (half-legal) grappa they make at home. The only thing I know in Croatian is : "somo malo" = "just a little one", because our host liked his grappa with the morning coffee...

Well, lengthy workshops and meetings in Zagreb, and generally being knackered after them, meant that I didn't explore the beer offerings very well at all. That and the fact that the place was a bit mental what with the Croatia match on Monday (great asmosphere!).

I did get to try the Medvedgrad wheat beer, [i:jqxkgpkd]Dva Klasa[/i:jqxkgpkd], meaning "Two Spikes" which was like a darkish Weiss Bier. Very smooth and easy to drink. In fact, it was so smooth and velvety it felt like it was nitrogenated. Tasted pretty much like a "regular" german weiss (of the Erdinger variety), so not too challenging, but quaffable if you had a thirst on you. My colleague had a [i:jqxkgpkd]Mrki Medvjed[/i:jqxkgpkd], meaning Brown Bear, which was an amber-coloured ale of some description. It was equally smooth on the tongue, but had practically no body, and not much of a finish to it.

The best beer I had there was a Leffe Brun with a fantastic steak in a little restaurant overlooking the city

It looks like I'll be going back in the next couple of weeks, so I'll try harder next time

Well, back in Croatia for a couple of nights, and after a fairly dim meal last night we decided to go back to the place with the great steaks where I had a couple of Leffe Brunes. The steak was pretty poor tonight though

After that we found one of the bars scoopergen mentioned; Carpe Diem. I thought it'd be alot more interesting from his description of vaulted cielings, but it was just some arches in stone in the ground floor. I was expecing a bier keller type of affair. Still, it was a nice bar, but we sat outsite beside a group of middleages Croatian lads out on the batter. Was funny

Anyway, we asked what local beers they had and the georgeous young blonde rattled off a list. I just said, yes, that last one, she said light or dark, and I said dark. So I ended up with a [b:1vg0q94y]Velebitsko[/b:1vg0q94y], a dark beer at 6.1%. At first I thought "raisens" but then I nailed it with Pflaumen Mousse, a plum jam kinda thing you get in Germany, which I like very much. The aroma is exactly like Pflaumen Mousse, and the flavour is not far off it either. Very fruity, kinda sweet and sticky, and with low carbonation (this was bottled). The most "interesting" beer so far from Croatia for me.

Otherwise I've been drinking [b:1vg0q94y]Ožujsko[/b:1vg0q94y] which is everywhere; an innocuous lager thing. Malty profile, and ok with the greasy food which seems standard fare here.

Oh, and last night after a greasy meal and a couple of Ožujsko we went into one of the Medvedgrad bars. I had tried their "amber" last time, which was quite nice, but decided to go for their black beer. Meh. I don't know what I was expecting, but this was a bit boring. Actually, now that I think of it, it was a bit like a Dunkel Weisse, but without the tartness that you might get in a weissbier, but my mouth was expecting schwartzbier or porter. Meh. Won't try it again. If you can find it, give Velebitsko dark a go! I'll have to try the light one on my next trip (heading back to the Fatherland tomorrow).
